Maternal Mental Health

Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) affect roughly 1 in 7 women, moms, and families during pregnancy or postpartum, encompassing conditions like depression, anxiety, OCD, and psychosis. Hormonal, physical changes, sleep deprivation, and psychological adjustments to motherhood contribute to PMADs, posing significant mental health challenges. Untreated, these disorders significantly increase suicide risk due to overwhelming distress and isolation. Timely, empathetic support and treatment are vital to mitigate these risks and support mothers, emphasizing the need to destigmatize maternal mental health to encourage more women and families to seek help. PMADs are the #1 complication of pregnancy. Suicide accounts for at least 20% of postpartum deaths.
